Casciano di Murlo and Siena

Siena

Our campsite for the next little while. Le Soline. We are the only ones crazy enough to be camping at this time of year, so we have the place to ourselves!
Residents at the camp ground!

View of the valley from camp ground.

Village of Casciano that we had to drive through before arriving at the camp ground. A few narrow streets here!

Above - entrance to the 7km long fortified wall that still surrounds the 170 hectare site that is Siena. Siena is developed on three hills and is connected by three major streets forming a Y-shape and intersecting in a valley that became the Piazza del Campo.

Piazza del Campo, Siena

The start of the climb to the top of the Torre del Mangia. Built in 1338 - 1348 and standing 102m tall, there are 400 steps up!

It's a very narrow climb up!

Piazza del Campo. Here the Palio is held twice a year (July 2 and August 16). The Palio is when the various Sienese areas in which the city is divided, challenge each other in a passionate horse race. This piazza also appeared in James Bonds Quantum of Solace.

Siena Cathedral
