The Slaughters and Belas Knap Long Barrow, Gloucestershire, England: 23 June 2020

The Slaughters

Lower Slaughter

The Slaughters were very pretty, however my personal favourite was Lower Slaughter which is just off the Fosse Way.

Both villages are considered to be two of the prettiest in the area, and are well photographed.

A Mill is recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086 on the site of The Old Mill.  In the 14th Century it had begun to be known as Slaughter Mill and is now open to the public, however due to Covid it was closed when we visited.

The fascinating name derives from 'miry place'.

There is a mill in the shade of the tree to the left called The Old Mill.

The cars drive through the ford - you can see on the left where its a little wet on the road.

Churchyard.

This is the oldest grave we could find in the churchyard.

Belas Knap Long Barrow

We parked our car in the allocated parking on the side of the road and wandered up the bridle way to connect with the Cotswald Way public footpath, of which one took us to Belas Knap, which is about 5500 years old.

View of Sudeley Castle from our car park for Belas Knap.

View over the valley from our car park for Belas Knap.

Most of the fencing around here is like that on the right. Must take ages to construct!

Chamber C Entrance

False Entrance, known as a 'portal setting'.

Chamber D Entrance

Looking down to the valley.

View from the top of the paddock we walked though to get to the long barrow and back.

Was 30 degrees with not a lot of shade!
