Edinburgh to Grantown-on-Spey and Dalwhinne, Scotland - 12 August 2020

Last night we were hit by a huge slow moving storm that caused havoc across the region.  It started around 10pm with loads of thunder and lightning every few seconds. This continued until well after midnight. Thankfully it eased for a bit around 11pm and the boys managed to get to sleep, not before an extremely loud crack of thunder struck right above us followed very quickly by a huge flash of lightning!  It made us all jump, and for a moment concerned, given we were in a metal caravan!!  The rain was extremely heavy and obviously loud in our metal home!!

As a result of the storm we read on the news the following morning, that a house in Fyfe, not far from where we were, got struck by the lightning and caught fire.  All were fine thankfully.  We also read that a train heading from Aberdeen to Glasgow was hit by a landslide and killed three people.

We left our campsite just before midday and made our way up into the Scottish Highlands.  It was a relatively short drive (240km)  from Edinburgh to Grantown-on-Spey Caravan Park set in the Scottish Highlands.

On the way we stopped at our favourite whiskey distillery, Dalwhinnie.  We were lucky enough to be offered a tasting in their shop, so of course we obliged - it would be rude not to!!

From here we continued on to our campsite set in the Cairngorm Mountains run by the park wardens.  The caravan park is amazing with the best WiFi we have had from any campsite in all our travels, and is well looked after and the facilities are very good.

We will be based here for six nights.
