Today a drive down to Fort William via the A95 and A86 through Spean Bridge and then back up to Inverness.
Our first stop was Loch Laggan which was beautiful. The Eastern end of this loch features the largest freshwater beach in Britain.
From here we continued on and stopped briefly at Laggan Dam on the Spean River. We then continued on to Neptune's Staircase, a series of eight lochs on the Caledonian Canal lifting boats 20m. This series of lochs link Loch Oich with Loch Ness and is the longest staircase canal in Britain, taking around 90 minutes to navigate. We were lucky enough to watch three boats near the top, beginning their descent.
From here we drove on to Fort William stopping briefly on the side of the Loch Linnhe for some pictures, and then at the Commando Memorial for beautiful views.
Approaching the bridge crossing the canal at Loch Oich, we saw they were about to close the road and open the bridge to allow two boats to pass so we stopped to see it.
After passing through Fort Augustus and driving up the A82 we get our first glimpse of Loch Ness. The race is on for Cale and Nico to spot Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster!!
On the way to Inverness we stopped at Urquhart Castle for some pictures. Urquhart is a ruined 16th-century fortress right on the edge of Loch Ness.
Dinner at Pizza Express and finally being able to have dough balls was a great end to the day before driving back to camp in Grantown-on-Spey.
Another amazing day in the Highlands weather wise, with 26 degrees!! The scenery on today's drive is just amazing!
